Obverse description Central device depicts a three-masted sailing vessel — Henry Hudson's ship the Half Moon — rendered in fine relief, sailing rightward across open water with a distant shoreline visible to the right. Below the ship, in the lower field, appears a displayed eagle holding an olive branch and arrows. The dates 1609 and 1959 are inscribed in two lines to the right of the ship, commemorating the 350th anniversary of Hudson's discovery of Manhattan Island. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central design, punctuated by small five-pointed stars, reading AD MDCIX HENRICUS HUDSON INSULAM MANHATTAN APERUIT 1609 1959.
