The "Aureus Magnus" pieces struck in 1955 were private bullion issues produced by West German goldsmiths and medal manufacturers — not authorized state coinage — and circulated almost entirely among collectors and gold hoarders during a period when West Germans, still scarred by the currency collapses of 1923 and 1948, retained a deep private appetite for hard metal. The X# prefix in standard references signals exactly this: a non-circulating, non-governmental issue assigned to the "Unusual World Coins" category by default.
At 35 grams of .980 fine gold, the piece contains more actual gold than a genuine 10-ducat imperial striking.
