Constantine II had already fled Greece by December of that year following a failed counter-coup, leaving the colonels in effective control — yet his portrait continued to appear on Greek coinage through 1970, a bureaucratic fiction of royal legitimacy that the regime found useful. He was formally deposed in absentia when Greece was declared a republic in 1973.
