The circular Greek legend surrounds the portrait, reading 'ΚΩΝΣΤΑΝΤΙΝΟΣ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΤΩΝ ΕΛΛΗΝΩΝ' (Constantine King of the Greeks). The engraver's signature 'Β. This issue belongs to the coinage introduced under the military junta that seized power in April 1967. Constantine II had already fled Greece by December of that year following a failed counter-coup, leaving the colonels in effective control — yet his portrait continued to appear on Greek coinage through 1970, a bureaucratic fiction of royal legitimacy that the regime found useful. He was formally deposed in absentia when Greece was declared a republic in 1973.
