Singapore's lunar series began in 1967 and the 1986 Tiger issue marks the third full cycle of the twelve-year zodiac sequence produced by the mint. The .500 fineness is notably lower than the .999 silver used by most contemporary sovereign lunar programs — a deliberate cost decision that kept the series accessible to regional collectors during a period when Singapore was still consolidating its position as Southeast Asia's primary numismatic market.
The KM#59a designation distinguishes this proof striking from the business strike KM#59, both produced the same year.
