The Marshall Islands exploited a legal quirk in its Compact of Free Association with the United States — which granted the islands the right to issue their own currency — to produce an extensive series of commemorative coins through the 1990s that were legal tender in name but never intended for circulation. This Columbia piece was issued the year the shuttle completed mission STS-75, during which the Tethered Satellite System deployment ended in cable failure at nearly full extension.
