Obverse description The obverse bears the national seal of the Republic of the Marshall Islands centered in the field, depicting a frigate bird with spread wings above a traditional Marshallese outrigger canoe sailing on stylized waves, flanked by palm trees, with a radiant sun above. Two crossed traditional implements appear behind the central device. The circular legend REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS arcs along the upper rim, with the denomination $10 at the lower left and the date 1996 at the lower right, both flanking the seal. The national motto JEPILPILIN KE EJUKAAN is inscribed along the lower rim, and the word SEAL appears on a banner at the base of the central device. The entire design is framed by a beaded inner border and a rope-style outer border.

Additional information

The Marshall Islands exploited a legal quirk in its Compact of Free Association with the United States — which granted the islands the right to issue their own currency — to produce an extensive series of commemorative coins through the 1990s that were legal tender in name but never intended for circulation. This Columbia piece was issued the year the shuttle completed mission STS-75, during which the Tethered Satellite System deployment ended in cable failure at nearly full extension. The coins were sold directly to collectors via direct-mail campaigns, making genuine circulation examples essentially nonexistent.
