Reverse description Two chimpanzees rendered in high relief occupy the central field: a large adult female seated to the left faces a smaller juvenile to the right, the pair interacting in a naturalistic pose suggestive of a mother-and-offspring bond. The background field is deeply mirrored in proof finish, providing strong contrast to the frosted animal devices. The arc legend 'THE AFRICAN MONKEY' runs along the upper periphery, flanked by raised dots, while the lower portion carries the inscriptions '1 OZ.999' to the left, '$10' centrally, and 'FINE SILVER' to the right.

Additional information

Somalia's 1999 wildlife series was struck under license arrangements common to the period, where the issuing nation had virtually no involvement in production — these coins were designed, minted, and marketed entirely by European distributors targeting collector markets. The nominal Somali authority behind the issue was, by 1999, the Transitional National Government, a body that controlled little territory and issued coinage largely as a revenue stream rather than a function of monetary policy.

Chimpanzees are not native to Somalia.
