The Me 262, the world's first operational jet-powered fighter, entered Luftwaffe service in 1944 after Hitler's insistence on configuring early production models as bombers delayed deployment by critical months — a decision that almost certainly cost Germany its only realistic chance of air superiority in the final war years.
