The Provincial Bank of Kwangtung Province was one of several regional Chinese institutions that contracted American Bank Note Company during the late Qing and early Republican periods, when domestic security printing capacity was limited and foreign-engraved notes carried more public credibility. ABNC's New York plant produced the plates and sheets; the notes were then shipped to Canton for issue.
Kwangtung's currency situation in 1918 was complicated by the province's semi-autonomous political position under the southern military government, which was operating in direct opposition to the Beijing administration. Notes from this period circulated in a fractured monetary environment where provincial paper frequently traded at a discount against foreign silver.
