| Descripción del reverso |
The reverse presents a facing portrait effigy of Johannes Rau, 8th President of the Federal Republic of Germany (1999–2004), rendered in high relief against a polished field. The subject is depicted in a contemporary suit and tie, with his facial features struck with considerable detail befitting a proof issue. The legend 1999 - 2004 JOHANNES RAU arcs along the upper periphery within a beaded border, while the denomination 10 DOLLARS appears in the lower field, also within the beaded inner circle. |

Nauru's gold commemorative program of the mid-2000s was largely driven by export to the collector market rather than any domestic monetary function — the island's population at the time barely exceeded 10,000. Johannes Rau, the Social Democrat who served as Germany's Federal President from 1999 until this coin's issue year, died in January 2006, making this almost certainly a memorial piece struck within months of his death.
