| Obverse description | The obverse features the coat of arms of Nauru centrally positioned in the field, depicting a quartered shield supported by two frigate birds with outstretched wings, surmounted by a twelve-pointed star above a scroll inscribed NAOERO, and a lower scroll bearing the national motto GOD'S WILL FIRST. The legend BANK OF NAURU arcs along the left and upper periphery, with the date 2006 positioned at the base of the design, all struck on a polished proof field. |

| Additional information |
Nauru's gold commemorative program of the mid-2000s was largely driven by export to the collector market rather than any domestic monetary function — the island's population at the time barely exceeded 10,000. Johannes Rau, the Social Democrat who served as Germany's Federal President from 1999 until this coin's issue year, died in January 2006, making this almost certainly a memorial piece struck within months of his death.
