| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of Liberia is centrally depicted, featuring a shield bearing a sailing ship at sea, a palm tree, and a rising sun, with a dove in flight above; a scroll across the shield bears the national motto THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE. The arms are flanked by sprigs of leaves and surmounted by the legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA along the upper periphery. The date 2001 is divided to either side of the arms in the field, and the denomination 10 DOLLARS appears in the lower exergue. A beaded border frames the entire design. |

Liberia's early 2000s commemorative program was one of the most prolific — and commercially cynical — in modern numismatics. Struck not for domestic circulation but almost entirely for export to collector markets in Europe and North America, these issues were produced in bulk by foreign mints under license, with Liberia lending its name and legal tender status to themes that had no particular connection to the country.
KM#559 belongs to a thematic series on communications technology timed to the turn of the millennium. The coins moved primarily through television shopping channels and mail-order dealers.
