The enlarged portrait format was introduced across U.S. currency beginning in 1996 as part of a major redesign driven by counterfeiting concerns — the Secret Service had documented a surge in high-quality reprographic fakes, particularly from Colombia, following the widespread availability of commercial color copiers and inkjet printers.
