This miniature gold issue belongs to a wave of novelty bullion pieces produced for the Asian collector market in the early 2010s, when mints across the Pacific — including the New Zealand Mint acting on behalf of Fiji — aggressively targeted Chinese buyers with pearl-themed and jade-inset formats. Fiji's nominal sovereignty made it a convenient issuing authority for coins never intended to circulate there.
