Beschrijving voorzijde The complete National Arms of Barbados occupies the central field, featuring a quartered shield bearing a bearded fig tree and two Pride of Barbados flowers, supported on the dexter by a dolphin and on the sinister by a pelican, with a helmet and mantling above surmounted by an arm holding two crossed pieces of sugar cane. A scrolling ribbon below the shield bears the national motto in two segments reading PRIDE AND INDUSTRY. The date 1983 is divided on either side of the arms, flanked by the trident symbol of Barbados, and the legend BARBADOS curves along the lower periphery within a beaded border.

Beschrijving keerzijde A highly detailed, naturalistic depiction of a Brown Pelican in full flight occupies the central field, its broad wings fully extended upward and outward with individually rendered primary feathers, the bird's long bill and pouch clearly defined as it soars in left profile. The design fills the field with dramatic depth and fine engraving detail against a plain background. The denomination legend TEN DOLLARS curves along the lower right periphery within a beaded border.

Aanvullende informatie

Barbados issued this piece ahead of the 1984 Los Angeles Games, joining a wave of Caribbean nations that used Olympic commemoratives in the early 1980s as a revenue mechanism — collector sales, not circulation, were always the intended destination. The copper-nickel composition was a deliberate cost-cutting choice; silver versions were struck simultaneously for a premium market, making the CN pieces the poor relation of the same issue.
