The British Virgin Islands has no independent monetary policy and issues commemorative coinage purely as a licensing arrangement — the territory uses the US dollar in daily commerce and these pieces are struck for the collector market by the Pobjoy Mint or similar contractors, never entering local circulation. The 2016 Rio Olympics generated an enormous wave of such issues across dependent territories worldwide, most sharing dies with minor authority changes.
KM#501.2 distinguishes this from the non-colored variant (.1), the sole difference being the applied color layer.
