To the left, a flat-relief architectural cross-section reveals the internal structural arches, galleries, and decorative marble banding of the tower's exterior walls, while additional partial facades of the Pisan Romanesque ensemble extend into the surrounding field. The inscription LEANING TOWER OF PISA arcs along the upper rim, with 650 YEARS inscribed in the lower left field and the commemorative dates 1372 – 2022 along the lower right rim. |

The Leaning Tower's tilt, roughly 3.97 degrees as of recent measurements after stabilization work completed in 2001, is the result of soft subsoil on one side — a construction defect noticed before the third floor was even finished in the 12th century.
