Nauru's euro-denominated collector series from the early 2000s was produced specifically for the European market ahead of and following the euro's physical introduction in January 2002. The Bank of Nauru had no domestic circulation economy to speak of — the island's finances were already in freefall following the collapse of phosphate revenues — making these purely a foreign exchange revenue play aimed at European coin collectors.
