Obverse description The flan is struck in the contoured outline of the map of continental Europe, including the British Isles and the Iberian Peninsula, rendered with matte finish surfaces. Centered within the composition, the national arms of Nauru are depicted in fine relief, featuring the traditional frigate bird above a rising sun and a central shield charged with a lime flower motif, encircled by a wreath. The legend BANK OF NAURU arcs above the arms, and the date 2002 appears below, all in incuse Latin lettering against the matte silver field.

Additional information

Nauru's euro-denominated collector series from the early 2000s was produced specifically for the European market ahead of and following the euro's physical introduction in January 2002. The Bank of Nauru had no domestic circulation economy to speak of — the island's finances were already in freefall following the collapse of phosphate revenues — making these purely a foreign exchange revenue play aimed at European coin collectors.

KM#13 sits in a series that leaned heavily on the euro transition as a marketing hook, a strategy employed by several Pacific island nations with no connection to the eurozone whatsoever.
