Niue has long operated as one of the Pacific's most prolific licensing mints, issuing collector coins under agreements that have little to do with the island's 1,500-person population and everything to do with royalty arrangements with foreign distributors. This 2002 Entei piece is part of a Pokémon series issued under such an arrangement, timed to capitalize on the franchise's peak Western commercial momentum following the 1998 North American launch.
KM#162 is one of several Niue Pokémon issues from this period now tracked by collectors as a distinct sub-series. Mintages were never officially published by the issuing authority.
