Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse presents an allegorical composition commemorating the 500th anniversary of Columbus's encounter with the New World. At center, a tall-masted caravel is depicted in relief, flanked by two standing figures: to the left, a nude indigenous figure holding a vessel, and to the right, Christopher Columbus in period dress with his hand placed upon his chest. Below the ship, an ornate scroll cartouche bears the inscription ENCOUNTER BETWEEN TWO WORLDS in three lines. The denomination 10 DOLLARS is inscribed in the lower field beneath the cartouche.

Aanvullende informatie

Barbados issued this piece as part of the wave of Columbus quincentenary coinage that flooded collector markets throughout the early 1990s — a phenomenon driven less by numismatic demand than by the IOC and various national mints coordinating commemorative programs ahead of the 1992 anniversary. The Central Bank of Barbados participated alongside dozens of other nations, most issuing silver pieces of near-identical intent.

Columbus never landed on Barbados. The island was uninhabited when Portuguese sailors — not Spanish — first documented it in the early 16th century, likely around 1536.
