Additional information

Barbados issued this piece as part of the wave of Columbus quincentenary coinage that flooded collector markets throughout the early 1990s — a phenomenon driven less by numismatic demand than by the IOC and various national mints coordinating commemorative programs ahead of the 1992 anniversary. The Central Bank of Barbados participated alongside dozens of other nations, most issuing silver pieces of near-identical intent.

Columbus never landed on Barbados. The island was uninhabited when Portuguese sailors — not Spanish — first documented it in the early 16th century, likely around 1536.
