Beschrijving voorzijde The obverse displays the coat of arms of Niue at center, a quartered shield surmounted by a royal crown and flanked on either side by native fern fronds serving as supporters. The four quarters of the shield depict the Southern Cross stars, a hut with human figures, a yellow grove with a standing figure, a sheaf, a sailing ship, and crossed hammers, all rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished field. The legend NIUE appears along the upper left arc and the date 1997 along the upper right arc, both in raised serif lettering.

Aanvullende informatie

Issued in 1997, the year Diana died in Paris on 31 August, this coin was part of a flood of commemorative silver pieces produced by small Pacific island nations exploiting their minting rights for the international collector market. Niue, with a population under 2,000, has long licensed its coinage authority to overseas mints — this piece having no meaningful circulation function on the island whatsoever.

The 28.28g/.925 specification is the standard Commonwealth commemorative format, used across dozens of issuers simultaneously.
