This piece belongs to Cook Islands' long-running commemorative program, which has used the territory's nominal sovereignty to issue collector coins for the global market since the 1970s — a common arrangement among Pacific island jurisdictions whose minting programs bear little relationship to domestic commerce. The Cristo Redentor statue in Rio de Janeiro, completed in 1931 after nearly a decade of construction, was engineered by Heitor da Silva Costa and sculpted by French artist Paul Landowski.
Cook Islands had no hand in the subject matter beyond licensing rights.
