Obverse description Central effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in right-facing profile, laureate and draped, after the portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley, whose initials IRB appear below the truncation. The portrait is set within a polished circular field, surrounded by an ornamental border divided into alternating panels depicting stylized quatrefoil rosettes and cherubic angel-face motifs in relief, evoking Baroque decorative imagery. The peripheral legend arcs around the rim on a dark polished band, reading NIUE ISLAND to the left and ELIZABETH II · CM · to the upper right, with AU 999,9 · 2018 · and 10 DOLLARS inscribed below and to the right.

Additional information

The Basilica of the Assumption of Mary and Saints Cyril and Methodius in Velehrad, Moravia, is one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in Central Europe — Cyril and Methodius having devised the Glagolitic script in the 9th century and evangelized Greater Moravia, making Velehrad the symbolic heart of Slavic Christianity. Pope John Paul II visited in 1985, drawing an estimated 150,000 pilgrims despite Czechoslovakia's communist government attempting to frame the event as a purely cultural, not religious, gathering.

Niue's role here is purely fiduciary; the island's legal tender framework has made it a vehicle for commemorative gold issues aimed squarely at the European collector market since the early 2000s. This piece was struck by the Czech Mint on Niue's authority.
