Beschrijving voorzijde Youthful right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, rendered in high relief. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs across the upper field, with SOLOMON ISLANDS and the date 1983 completing the inscription around the lower periphery. The portrait is attributed to the Arnold Machin design, presenting the Queen in a classic regal style characteristic of Commonwealth coinage of the era.

Aanvullende informatie

The Solomon Islands gained independence from Britain on 7 July 1978, making this 1983 issue the fifth-anniversary commemorative. The islands had been a British protectorate since 1893, and the transition to independence was notably smooth compared to many Pacific decolonizations of the period — no constitutional crisis, no referendum dispute, just a quiet handover that the international press largely ignored.

KM#17a designates the sterling silver version; a cupro-nickel KM#17 was struck for circulation alongside it.
