The Solomon Islands gained independence from Britain on 7 July 1978, making this 1983 issue the fifth-anniversary commemorative. The islands had been a British protectorate since 1893, and the transition to independence was notably smooth compared to many Pacific decolonizations of the period — no constitutional crisis, no referendum dispute, just a quiet handover that the international press largely ignored.
