Struck to mark the Bahamas' first independence referendum preparations, this issue precedes actual independence by a year — the Commonwealth of the Bahamas formally separated from Britain on July 10, 1973. The 1972 date places it in the final months of intense political negotiation between Lynden Pindling's Progressive Liberal Party and Westminster, a period when commemorative gold issues served the dual purpose of building foreign reserve credibility ahead of the transition.
