The Bahamas issued this coin to mark the run-up to the 1992 quincentenary of Columbus's first landfall, which most historians place at San Salvador — an island now within Bahamian territory. That geographic claim gave Nassau particular motivation to participate in the wave of commemorative issues flooding the market in the early 1990s.
Struck by the Royal Mint on contract, as was standard for Bahamian commemoratives of this period.
