The Chassigny meteorite fell on October 3, 1815, near the village of Chassigny in Haute-Marne, France — a single observed fall yielding roughly four kilograms of material. It is one of the rarest categories of Martian meteorites, a dunite composed almost entirely of olivine, and only a handful of confirmed chassignites exist in collections worldwide. Fiji's role as issuer is purely nominal, a licensing arrangement common to the commemorative bullion sector.
Coins in this series incorporate an authenticated fragment of the meteorite embedded in the flan — meaning each example contains actual Martian mantle material estimated to be approximately 1.3 billion years old.
