To the right, a detailed engraving of a period sailing vessel — consistent with the caravels of Columbus's 1492 fleet — is shown at sea with full sails set. A compass rose device appears in the upper central field. The curved legend ARRIVAL IN THE NEW WORLD arcs across the upper field, with the name COLUMBUS inscribed prominently beneath it in larger lettering.

The Bank of Jamaica had by 1990 largely abandoned copper-nickel for its circulating coinage in favor of smaller aluminum-bronze pieces, making this a purpose-struck commemorative with no circulation role whatsoever.
