The "First Spouse" bullion series, of which this piece is part, was created under the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005. Jackson presented an obvious problem: a widower at the time of his presidency, the program's designers substituted a personification of Liberty drawn from the obverse of gold coinage circulating during his administration rather than depict a specific individual — a solution that applied to any president who served without a first lady.
Mintages for the Jackson Liberty issue were among the lowest in the series, with fewer than 4,000 gold bullion strikes produced.
