Bank Al-Maghrib's bimetallic dirham coinage underwent a significant redesign series beginning in the early 2000s following Mohammed VI's accession in 1999, with denominations progressively updated to reflect the new reign. The 2023 dating places this among the more recent strikes in that ongoing program, issued against a backdrop of Morocco's continued monetary modernization and the dirham's managed float policy maintained since 2018.
