Joan Martí i Alanis served as Bishop of Urgell from 1971 to 2003, making him one of the longest-serving holders of that office — and therefore one of the longest-serving co-princes of Andorra in modern history. The bishopric's co-princeship is not ceremonial: it derives from an 1278 paréage between the Bishop of Urgell and the Count of Foix, a feudal arrangement that has never been formally dissolved and remains the constitutional basis of Andorran sovereignty to this day.
Andorra adopted its first written constitution only in 1993, four years before this coin was struck.
