Joan Martí i Alanis served as Bishop of Urgell — and therefore Co-Prince of Andorra — from 1971 until his death in 2003, making him one of the longest-tenured holders of that feudal office in modern history. The Co-Principality's coinage authority is shared between the Bishop and the French head of state, an arrangement dating to the 1278 Paréage between the Count of Foix and the Bishop of Urgell that has never been formally dissolved.
Andorra's Europa-themed silver issues of the 1990s were struck primarily for the collector market, as the principality used French and Spanish currency for everyday commerce until adopting the euro in 2002.
