Andorra's coinage program effectively began in 1982, when the Consell General authorized the first modern issues under both co-princes — a peculiarity of the principality's feudal constitution, which places joint sovereignty in the Bishop of Urgell and the French head of state simultaneously. Joan Martí i Alanis, who held the episcopal seat from 1971 to 2003, was the first Bishop of Urgell to appear on a circulating-format Andorran coin. The 1984 series marked an early attempt to establish numismatic revenue as a meaningful income stream for a microstate with no central bank and no independent monetary authority.
