The "coup d'état" in question is Zine El Abidine Ben Ali's bloodless removal of Habib Bourguiba on 7 November 1987 — framed officially as a medical takeover after a panel of doctors certified Bourguiba unfit to govern. Ben Ali then institutionalized November 7th as a national holiday and minted commemorative issues at each anniversary, making this date one of the most consistently celebrated on Tunisian numismatic calendars through the 1990s and into the 2000s.
The Arabic-legend variant exists alongside a French-legend counterpart for the same anniversary, a bilingual production practice common to Tunisian commemoratives of this period.
