The Peace of Westphalia, concluded in Osnabrück and Münster in 1648, ended the Thirty Years' War — a conflict that had killed roughly a third of the German-speaking population through combat, famine, and disease. The commemorative was issued on the 350th anniversary of those treaties, which also established principles of state sovereignty and religious tolerance that later legal scholars consider foundational to modern international law.
Germany's 10 Mark commemorative silver program ran from 1972 through the euro transition, and this was among the final issues before the series ended.
