The legend BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND arcs along the upper periphery, while DEUTSCHE 10 MARK appears along the lower periphery. At the upper left of the shield appears the Teutonic Order's heraldic emblem, a pointed shield bearing a black cross. To the right, a crowned Madonna holding the Christ Child is shown in relief in a medieval Gothic style, with a nimbus behind her head. The circumferential legend reads 800 JAHRE DEUTSCHER ORDEN along the left and upper border, with the commemorative dates 1190-1990 along the right.
