Issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, founded in 1949 as the first institution of higher education in what was then the People's Republic of Macedonia. The university was named for the ninth-century Byzantine missionaries credited with devising the Glagolitic script — the precursor to Cyrillic — and whose cultural significance to Slavic identity made them an obvious choice for a newly constituted socialist republic asserting its distinct national character.
Macedonia declared independence in 1991, and this 1999 issue came during an early period of the National Bank establishing a commemorative coinage program for a state barely a decade old. KM#11 is a low-mintage gold piece with limited secondary market presence.
