Obverse description Printed in blue on a polychrome underprint, in intaglio and lithography, the obverse centres on a portrait vignette of Manuel Ferraz de Campos Salles, 4th President of the Republic (1898–1902), flanked on either side by the numeral 10. A diagonal manuscript conference signature crosses the body of the note. In the upper-left and lower-right corners, blue overprint rosettes applied by the Casa da Moeda carry the inscription CASA DA MOEDA / 10 / CRUZEIROS, converting the original 10 Mil Réis denomination to 10 Cruzeiros.

Brazil's 1942 monetary reform abolished the Mil Réis and introduced the Cruzeiro at par — one Cruzeiro for one Mil Réis — meaning the face value didn't change, only the unit name did. Rather than print an entirely new series immediately, the Treasury authorized overprinting existing American Bank Note Company stock of the 10 Mil Réis (P#39) with the new denomination. It was a transitional measure, not a permanent solution.

The overprinted series circulated alongside freshly printed Cruzeiro notes during the changeover, and attrition was high. The ABNCo plate work underlying the overprint dates to an earlier commission entirely.
