Brazil's road-building program of the 1960s and 70s — the centerpiece of successive military government infrastructure campaigns — carved highways through the Amazon and connected coastal cities to the interior for the first time. The coin circulated during a period when that same military regime was ceding power, with the *abertura* political opening leading to civilian rule by 1985.
The stainless steel composition reflects a chronic problem: Brazil's inflation rate during these years made traditional alloy coinage economically absurd. By 1986, the cruzeiro itself was abolished in favor of the cruzado, rendering this entire series obsolete almost overnight.
