Arktikugol Trust — the Soviet-era coal-mining enterprise still operating on the Svalbard archipelago under Norwegian sovereignty — has issued commemorative token coinage for decades, exploiting a quirk of the 1920 Spitsbergen Treaty that permits Russian commercial presence on the islands.
