Piedfort trial strikes of this type were produced not for circulation but for submission to the Colonial Office in London, where officials assessed proposed coinage before authorizing full production runs. The 1886 Hong Kong 10-cent series was among several denominations under review as the colony worked to standardize its subsidiary silver coinage amid growing trade volumes through the port.
