| 裏面の説明 | A pair of curved elephant tusks arc symmetrically around the central round hole, their tips pointing upward and inward to frame the numeral 10 displayed prominently above the perforation. Two small lozenge-shaped ornaments appear in the lower field on either side. The legend EAST AFRICA is inscribed along the upper periphery, while the date 1922 is positioned at the base, all within a beaded inner border and milled outer rim. |

The East Africa Currency Board was established in 1919 specifically to manage a unified coinage across British East Africa, replacing the earlier Indian rupee-based system that had proved administratively cumbersome across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanganyika. The florin-based decimal system it introduced was itself a compromise — designed to ease transition for Indian merchant communities while aligning with broader British colonial monetary policy.
The unusually heavy bronze specification for a 10-cent piece was a deliberate choice, intended to give the coins a perceived solidity and heft that would encourage acceptance among populations skeptical of unfamiliar currency. Several die varieties are known across this run, particularly in the earlier dates.
