Canada's 1967 centennial coinage was planned years in advance as a national commemoration, with each denomination assigned a different wildlife design selected through a competition judged by the National Gallery. The dime's design went to Alex Colville, the celebrated realist painter — one of several prominent Canadian artists commissioned for the series.
The .500 fine silver composition of KM#67a replaced a mid-year run struck in .800 silver, the switch driven by rising silver spot prices that made the original alloy economically untenable before the centennial year had even ended.
