Fiji's decimal coinage was overhauled in 2012 when the Reserve Bank withdrew the existing series and introduced smaller, lighter coins to reduce minting costs — a practical reform driven partly by the price of nickel following the commodity spikes of the late 2000s. The colourized variant of this issue was produced for the collector market, not general circulation.
