The Dupré module essays of 1870 were produced at a moment of institutional collapse — the Franco-Prussian War ended the Second Empire in September, and the nascent Third Republic was simultaneously fighting Prussian forces and rebuilding a monetary administration from scratch. Pattern strikes like this one were part of exploratory work on a reformed decimal coinage that would never reach circulation in this form. The essai designation and oversized module suggest this was a weight-standard reference piece rather than a circulation candidate.
