This type entered circulation under the Plano Real, Brazil's 1994 monetary reform that finally broke the back of chronic hyperinflation after years of failed stabilization attempts — the Cruzeiro, Cruzado, and Cruzado Novo had all collapsed before it. The longevity of this issue, spanning a quarter century without fundamental redesign, reflects the Real's unusual durability by Brazilian historical standards.
The three catalog variants (KM#649, 649.2, 649.3) document incremental die and planchet adjustments made across the production run at the Casa da Moeda do Brasil in Rio de Janeiro.
